Back in 2002, Mr Park was still a sprightly young 82-year-old.
Planning to write a memoir, he went looking for records on the government's new nominal roll – supposedly a list of all those who served in WWII.
His name was there, but many of his mates weren't.
At first he said he was surprised, but not long after that he got angry.
"This nominal roll was designed so that anyone, anywhere in the world, could put in a name and get the details of his service," Mr Park said.
