Subject: Presentation at UCAS Annual Teachers and Advisers Conference, Telford

Dear Colleagues,
I've volunteered to give a presentation at this event on Tuesday 10 February 2015 on the topic of decision making at August Confirmation, to help teachers understand the challenges we face in managing near misses when at that point considerable numbers of applicants holding offers either have incomplete results or are insurance with us and no firm choice decision. You may be aware that the speed of decision making on near miss applicants is a topic of considerable interest to the school sector at the moment and there are some myths that need dispelling.
It would be good if another institution would like to co-present this session so that teachers can hear about more than one university's approach. If you are interested could you let me know by 11 December? Thanks. If you'd like to discuss this first, do let me know.

For info, here is the outline of the session I gave to UCAS:
Near misses at Confirmation: managing the risk and minimising the wait.

  * short summary: this session will discuss the process at a university for considering students holding offers who miss the conditions of their offer when results are published, identifying the challenges and the principles that underpin policy and practice.
  * benefits to the audience: feedback from the schools sector has identified this as an important issue for them, with insufficient knowledge of the practices in universities for them to best support their students. This session aims to respond to that need and also provide a forum to share experiences and identify potential improvements.

With best wishes,
Richard
