2011 Census Update

9 December 2014

Online at 2.30pm

This webinar will provide brief updates on the wide range of 2011 census data available through the UK Data Service.

It will summarise the progress which has already been made to make data available through the service. It will also identify which products are outstanding but still anticipated.

It will be of interest to users who have questions about what we currently have, or who are awaiting data that are as yet unavailable. The webinar will be delivered by UK Data Service staff members who specialise in aggregate, flow, and microdata, as well as boundaries.

Born talking: Using birth cohort data about speech, language and communication to inform policy and practice

Friday 12 December 2014

Online at 3pm

Birth cohorts are longitudinal studies that typically include data about many thousands of people. They involve data collection around the time of the participants’ birth and at regular intervals through the lifespan (see, for example, http://www.cls.ioe.ac.uk/). Data from birth cohorts have been used to inform policy and practice in many areas of health and education, but have been relatively under-used to research speech, language and communication (SLC). Findings from the birth cohorts could have an important impact on policy and practice in SLC by, for example, demonstrating the need for SLC-related services and identifying factors associated with risk and resilience around SLC disability.

A series of ESRC-funded events in 2015-16 will explore the potential of these datasets in the area of SLC. In this webinar, we seek to engage stakeholders with an interest in SLC – including researchers, practitioners, policy-makers and third sector organisations – to help us to shape the upcoming events. Speakers will be Jan McAllister, University of East Anglia; James Law, Newcastle University; and Wendy Lee, The Communication Trust. The webinar is facilitated by the UK Data Service, through which the birth cohort data are available.

Webinar: Open geographies and open software - using open UKDS Census Support datasets in open source GIS software

Wednesday 21 January, 16:00 to 17:00

This webinar will provide an introduction to the range of open data that is available through Census Support. Through practical examples based around the geographic visualisation and spatial analysis of census data we will explore the range of the open source GIS software that is available.

A large number of geospatial datasets, including boundaries and geographic look-up tables are available through UK Data Service Census Support as open data and can be downloaded by anyone. In recent years open source GIS software has reached a point of maturity of being able to match or even exceed the capabilities of traditional proprietary GIS software.
