ESRC funded PhD studentship, LSHTM, London.

Applications are invited for a three- or four-year ESRC CASE PhD
studentship, beginning September 2015. Candidates should have a strong
quantitative background and interest in developing advanced statistical
methods to support decision analysis in a health policy context.

The research project
This studentship offers the opportunity to gain experience in
sophisticated statistical techniques applied to the synthesis of data
from several study designs, while informing live health policy
decisions. This synthesis will require the student to extend causal
inference models that recognise time-varying relationships, to a
decision analysis context. This study will provide training
opportunities for a research student who wishes to further develop their
quantitative skills, while working on the interface between statistics
and health economics.
The research environment
The successful candidate for this ESRC CASE award will be based in the
Health Services Research and Policy department at the London School of
Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), for the majority of their time.
The candidate will have research supervisors at LSHTM (Prof Richard
Grieve and Dr Neil Hawkins) and a mentor at the partner organisation
(NHSBT) (Dr Gail Miflin, Associate Medical Director). The supervisory
team will provide guidance and focus on both the academic and
practice-related aspects of the project. The candidate will collaborate
with statisticians based at the highly regarded department of Medical
Statistics (LSHTM); a leading statistical methodologist will join the
PhD advisory panel.

Funding and eligibility
This studentship provides full tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and an
annual tax free living maintenance allowance for the duration of the
award; the 2014-15 ESRC stipend rate for full-time students is GBP
15,863 pa, including London weighting. International students are only
eligible for this ESRC studentship if they use Advanced Quantitative
Methods (AQM) in their doctoral research. Students who use AQM in their
doctoral research may be eligible for an enhanced stipend for the +3
portion of their award (GBP 3,000 p.a.).

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake additional
training. The precise training will depend on the student and structure
of the award but will have three main aspects: quantitative methods
training, vocational and research training at NHSBT, and transferable
skills training. The candidate will have access to modules from the
Masters programme and short courses at LSHTM. The student will have
their own training budget (GBP 750 pa for standard awards, GBP 1000 pa
for AQM), to meet more specialist training requirements, for example to
attend causal modelling courses run at external Universities.

This award is available in a number of routes: 1+3, +3, and +4. Each
candidate will need to apply for the route best suited to their
situation. Details of ESRC eligibility criteria can be accessed on the
ESRC website here
