Hi,

Dear All
I passed this email on to Sherri Steel, Curator of Social History at York
Castle Museum for many years but now retired. This is her response....

Yes.
It was founded by Gaby Porter, Jane Legget, Sue Kirby and me - and I
think there was another person I can't remember (sorry) - who came to the
very first meetings. Gaby and Jane were the main pushers and shapers. Other
people joined in later. Gaby, Sue and I were then on the SHCG committee.
There was quite a lot of opposition to it - which included some very well
known male members of the museum profession - which manifested itself
memorably in that year's AGM. You have to remember that this was the time
when exhibitions quite commonly didn't mention women at all. We've
forgotten now what it used to be like. Interesting times. I think WHAM
fizzled out - less need for it as time went on - I can't really remember.
None of the original organisers were involved by then. We held a conference
and did some journals - and then collapsed with exhaustion! Others mainly
carried it on.

I must say that its very scary that its not been remembered at all by
people whose job is history. And that the only person to say they remember
it thinks it was about looking at things from a single sex viewpoint - when
in fact it was the complete opposite and was all about the need to get the
other sex's viewpoint heard amid a sea of men's voices. Have people really
forgotten so much? When people talk about women's lost voices in history
you don't imagine that yours is going to be numbered among them!

Jane is in New Zealand and has been for years. Gaby Porter you know of
course. You can pass on the information to SHCG - I think they need to
know!!

Sherri
