From memory, WHAM approached SHCG when it wound up to see if it would be willing to take on the WHAM archive.  It was when I was on committee, at a guess around 2000, maybe a bit later.  I'm fairly sure we said 'no', as even then we were trying to find a home for/ get together the dispersed SHCG archive!

Many the original WHAM co-hort are still active in museums.  The archive has probably either been chucked, or it may be sitting in cupboard somewhere in Gaby Porter's house as a best guess!  I think other people who were active in WHAM included Liz Carnegie (now at Uni of Sheffield), Anne Murch (freelance consultant), possibly Janet Dugdale (NML), possibly Liz Frostick (Birmingham).  Gaby would be the best place to start.

I think it formally wound itself up as it was felt that issues around representation of women in museums had moved on rather by the late 1990s. To some extent, the professional networking element has been superceded by other groups for women leaders. But maybe with the third wave it is time it reformed!

Best wishes

Zelda

WHAM did get mentioned at the conference, but not a full paper as such.

There are three references to the group in the 2009 Journal (http://www.shcg.org.uk/domains/shcg.org.uk/local/media/downloads/journal/Journal%20034.pdf) in the articles by Steph Mastoris and Cathy Ross.

Subject: Women, Heitage and Museums (WHAM)
Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a first year PhD student investigating representations of Victorian women in museums. I am currently conducting the initial research for my literature review.

I came across on organisation called Women, Heritage and Museums (WHAM) which was formed in 1984. I believe the organisation was formed by committee members of the Social History Curators Group in 1983. I am struggling to find out whether WHAM still exists today or whether it was disbanded as I cannot found any references to it beyond its ten year anniversary conference in 1994. I was wondering whether SHCG would know. Or if you could direct me to someone who may be able to help me. I am keen to know whether it disbanded and if so, why? Any information would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Lauren Padgett BA, MA
