It is quite scary that a group which was so active back in the day is now totally forgotten by the section of museum workers from which it sprang – there was quite a lot of activity as I recall in the late 1970s, 1980s? – I was never a member because I never felt that social history should be looked at from a single sex viewpoint ( but that’s just me..); I wonder if the Museums Association archives has anything?? There were certainly study days etc. which should have been advertised in the SHCG ( or was it in the days of Group for Regional Studies?) newsletter.

I can’t be the only one so old that I remember it?

Chris

Hi All,

I’ve not heard of WHAM (before my time I’m afraid!) but if you don’t get any joy through any other route it might be worth approaching the Diversity in Heritage Group to see if they have any clues: http://diversityheritage.org/

Subject: Women, Heitage and Museums (WHAM)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a first year PhD student investigating representations of Victorian women in museums. I am currently conducting the initial research for my literature review.

I came across on organisation called Women, Heritage and Museums (WHAM) which was formed in 1984. I believe the organisation was formed by committee members of the Social History Curators Group in 1983. I am struggling to find out whether WHAM still exists today or whether it was disbanded as I cannot found any references to it beyond its ten year anniversary conference in 1994. I was wondering whether SHCG would know. Or if you could direct me to someone who may be able to help me. I am keen to know whether it disbanded and if so, why? Any information would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Lauren Padgett BA, MA
