2014 is International Year of Crystallography, and of the various events and resources, colleagues may like to know of an exhibition this month at the Royal Albert Hall [whose mission includes promoting understanding and appreciation of the arts & sciences].

'Illuminating Atoms' features images of crystallography and crystallographers plus reportage, by photographer Max Alexander.  Details at www.royalalberthall.com/tickets/exhibitions/illuminating-atoms/default.aspx  and www.stfc.ac.uk/3395.aspx?utm_source=HomePage&utm_medium=FlexSlider&utm_campaign=IlluminatingAtoms

Some particular highlights of this now 100-year old important technique include the identification of the structure of DNA in 1952, the early and strong role of women researchers in this area (Kathleen Lonsdale, Rosalind Franklin, Dorothy Hodgkin and many others), and the role of large facilities such as the synchrotrons e.g. Diamond Light Source and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility ESRF.
