anti-po-des call for abstracts, issue 3, 2015 (Nov 2014)

structures : the conceptual, physical and ideological structures by which
design efforts, actions, processes, objects and discourses impact on
society; and vice versa.

anti-po-des invites abstracts for papers that explore or engage with
the concept of structure at the intersection of design and society.
Whether from the perspective of design in society, or from the social
within design(ing), it is the structures that mediate and are mediated by
this relationship that we invite researchers, practitioners, sociologists
and others to focus on for issue 3.

xCoAx 2015: 3rd International Conference on Computation, Communication,

Deadline for submissions: 18 January 2015

Computational tools and media, from traditional computers and software to
the latest wearable artifacts, sensors, haptic interfaces and more, have
dramatically transformed the landscape of arts, design, and several other
cultural forms.

xCoAx is an exploration of this environment in the form of a
multi-disciplinary enquiry on aesthetics, computation, communication and
the elusive x factor that connects them all.

xCoAx is meant as a hub for the exchange of ideas and the discovery of
interdisciplinary and international synergies, with the participation of a
diverse confluence of computer scientists, media practitioners and
theoreticians working on the frontiers of digital arts and culture.

Our focus has always been on critical and stimulating intersections:
between the computable and the uncomputable, the communicable and the
incommunicable, the chaos of creativity and the rules of algorithms, the
human and the machine, in a constant search for new directions in
aesthetics.

Deadline for submissions: 7 December 2014

We are pleased to invite you to prepare and submit papers to the 20th
International Conference on Engineering Design, ICED 15!

The ICED15 conference will be held in Milan, at the same time as EXPO 2015,
making this a truly unique occasion for participants to attend both events.
The EXPO 2015 theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life” inspired the ICED
15 motto to be “Design for Life”, which points to the role and
responsibility that designers have in improving human existence.

“Design for a healthy life”, “Design for a sustainable life” and “Design
for a contented life” are three fields in which design can have a
particularly strong impact and have therefore been selected as themes for
the ICED 15 conference.

Focus Section of Interaction Design and Architecture(s): Designing
Self-Care for Everyday Life (Nov 2014)
<http://designcalls.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/focus-section-of-interaction-design-and-architectures-designing-self-care-for-everyday-life-nov-2014/>

OCTOBER 17, 2014

Website: http://www.mifav.uniroma2.it/idea2010/login.php
Deadline for submissions: 21 November 2014

To be published at the Interaction Design and Architecture(s) Journal
(IxD&A) (ISSN 1826-9745, eISSN 2283-2998)

Self-managing a chronic condition is a challenging activity. It requires
patients and caregivers to deal with symptoms and the possible
resulting disability, to manage emotions, and mediate their relationship
with health professionals. Self-care technologies have tried to help in
these tasks in multiple ways, including watching the evolution of symptoms,
performing health measurements, or connecting with others that have the
same condition. Nevertheless, self-care technologies often fail to
integrate themselves into people’s everyday life.

Designing self-care technology for everyday life requires an in-depth
understanding of the self-care strategies people use, the contexts in which
they live, and tools they have at their disposal. Acquiring this
understanding requires new approaches to the design of self-care
technologies.

The aim of this focus section is to invite researchers to explore the
challenges, opportunities, lessons learned, and theoretical insights of
self-care technologies to broaden the scope of IxD&A and HCI research in
self-care. This body of work is likely to inform the new generation of more
holistic self-care technologies that takes into account people’s everyday
life and experiences.

The works traditionally presented at DeSForM investigate the evolving
nature of design artifacts and how new forms or objects’ aesthetics convey
meaning. We aim to discuss the potential, the limits, and the constraints
of designing intriguing experiences with technology-affected artifacts (be
they tangible, virtual or intangible). We will also explore the balance of
aesthetics, ethics, meaning, and emotion in design.

In the last decades of the 20th century the academic research has become
aware of and interested in the changes brought by the industrialization and
democratization of culture. Whatever the concepts used to define these
changes – “information society”, “new economy”, “creative economy”,
“knowledge-based economy”, or “network society”, they reflect the interest
in the relation between culture, society and economy. Mass society
corresponds to a high scale of production, distribution and consumption of
cultural artifacts and services. In this context, the art for the sake of
art becomes questionable and this has transformed the cultural field and
the artists as well. A new definition of culture, more extensive and
inclusive, was needed to express different values and practices. Authors
like Pierre Bourdieu or Richard Florida opened the debate, by bringing into
the attention of academic world social and cultural practices ignored
before and they launched a new approach in their research field.

Special Issue of Constructivist Foundations: Composing Conferences:

Deadline for expressions of interest: 17 November 2014

The goal for this special issue of is to explore constructivist
alternatives to the conventional paper presentation format of academic
conferences. How can a conference be organised so that it can be an active
place of questioning and exchange where new research questions can be
composed and addressed? How can exploratory conversations be central rather
than peripheral to the programme? In what ways do constructivist approaches
to fields such as education or science also suggest possible rethinkings of
academic practices more generally?

The Canadian Engineering Education Association’s Annual Conference
(CEEA2015-McMaster) will be held at McMaster University in Hamilton,
Ontario from May 31 to June 3, 2015. All areas of engineering education
research and practice are invited, but we would like to theme the broader
discussion around what experiential education means for our students. This
conference offers a unique venue for academics and practitioners to discuss
recent trends in engineering education and education research. The
conference includes workshops, plenary sessions, and technical sessions.

This conference seeks to activate three conversational platforms embedded
in the conference title.

1) Design Education as Interface
2) Design Education as Diverse Cultural and Social Space
3) Design Education as Politics.

The conference will explore the idea that graphic design education is
rapidly evolving: the social spaces we work in, and the practices of
teaching and learning we engage with, are themselves mediated by larger
contexts of social, cultural, political and technological change. Mindful
of these changing contexts our conference will seek to pose questions about
the assumptions we make about the relationship between making design,
thinking about design, asking questions about design and theorizing design
in as open and potentially interdisciplinary a framework as possible.

We will also address how, as a specific discipline of making, we are
uniquely placed to explore the limits of the emerging conversation about
visual communication and visual culture in contemporary spaces of learning.
