Dear Colleagues,

we are looking for a motivated and talented PhD student for a mostly theoretical project, performed in collaboration with Rosario González Férez in Granada, Spain. Below is the announcement, which I hope you could bring to the attention of any interested parties.

Maybe you could also put up a printout of our list of openings on appropriate blackboards. The file is available for printout at http://desy.cfel.de/cid/cmi/opportunities/projects/index_print_eng.html.

Complete rotational control of arbitrarily complex molecules

Quantum-state selected cold samples enable strong laser alignment and mixed-field orientation. We have demonstrated world-record one- and three-dimensional alignment and mixed-field orientation of prototypical large molecules.
Based on our recent work and insight, the candidate will perform a detailed theoretical analysis and experimental verification of complete three-dimensional orientation of arbitrarily complex molecules. This includes primarily the development of advanced computation codes using state-of-the-art technology as well as their optimization to handle large molecules and complicated hamiltonians. The theory development will be performed in collaboration with partners in Granada, Spain. Moreover, together with other (senior) team members experiments to verify the theoretical results and their detailed analysis shall be performed. A good understanding of quantum mechanics is required. A strong background in theoretical or experimental physics, molecular physics, and in modern programming concepts would be highly beneficial.
