Dr Mary Moran the Executive Director of Policy Cures will be presenting the session, chaired by Dr Brendan Clarke, Lecturer in History and Philosophy of Medicine at UCL.  Policy Cures is an NGO providing research and analysis on the creation of new pharmaceuticals for neglected diseases. Dr Moran has over 20 years experience in health policy and practice, including 10 years specialising in neglected disease policy. She has conducted projects for a wide range of public and multilateral health organisations with a focus on policy solutions for emerging issues related to neglected disease R&D. In 2004, Mary founded the research group that became Policy Cures at the London School of Economics & Political Science, later transferring it to the George Institute for International Health in Sydney.

We also invited Prof Simon Croft from LSHTM and Dr Conrad Keating a medical historian from Oxford as commentators:

Simon Croft is Professor of Parasitology and Dean of the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. He focused his research on the identification and evaluation of novel drugs and formulations for the treatment of leishmaniasis, malaria, human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) and American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). From 2004 to 2007 Simon was the first R&D Director of the Drugs for Neglected Diseases Initiative (DNDi), Geneva.

Conrad Keating is the Writer-in-Residence at the Wellcome Unit for the History of Medicine at Oxford University. His biography of the distinguished epidemiologist Sir Richard Doll (Smoking Kills: The Revolutionary Life of Richard Doll) has sold over 2,000 copies since its launch at the Royal Society in October 2009.

Lunch will be served from 12:00 to 12:30, followed by presentations and discussion.
