Tom Watson has been MP for West Bromwich East since 2001 and is an avid campaigner for press freedom and self-regulation. He sat on the Culture Committee 2009-2012, during which period he grilled James and Rupert Murdoch in the wake of the phone hacking scandal. In 2012 the book he co-wrote with journalist Martin Hickman was published; “Dial M for Murdoch”.

Update on developments

As you may well know the past few months have been particularly eventful in the campaign. We continue to fight the battle against the press barons for a truly better and independent press industry. Just as we refuse to give in, some of the press continues to attack ruthlessly anyone who dares to stand up against the oppression and careless conduct.

Fresh Press Abuses

Most recently the Daily Mail lost a five-year libel action <https://inforrm.wordpress.com/2014/11/04/news-miller-v-associated-newspapers-supreme-court-refuses-permission-to-appeal-case-concludes-after-six-years/> brought by Andy Miller, a businessman it falsely accused of corrupt behaviour<http://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/nov/14/daily-mail-faces-3m-bill-libel-battle-andy-miller>. After appealing against defeats at every level up to the Supreme Court, the Mail faces costs of up to £3m. And though the paper libeled Miller on its front page, it has failed to print affair and accurate report of its own defeat, as it is supposed to do under the Editors Code written by its own editor, Paul Dacre.

Another example is that of actor Tom Ellis who won substantial damages and a court apology from the Sunday Mirror over unfounded allegations about his personal life (read more here<http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2014/nov/07/sundaymirror-medialaw>).

The Advertising Standards Authority also officially condemned the Sun for demeaning women after it offered a date with a page 3 topless model as a competition prize (read more here<http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2014/11/04/the-sun-page-3-girl-advert-banned-competition_n_6101592.html>).

Of course these are just a few of the many attacks that continue to take place. In order for Hacked Off to campaign we need your generous donations - if you don’t like online payment services - just email us we can send you details of other options.

Criminal trial updates

  * The trial of six current and former Sun journalists on charges of corrupting public officials heard that three million News International emails were missing following a decision to accelerate the mass deletion of emails taken by former chief executive Rebekah Brooks. This appears to be a serious underestimate<http://fothom.wordpress.com/2014/11/07/the-millions-of-deleted-emails-from-news-international/>. The court also saw a 2006 memo insisting that all cash payments to sources by the Sun were signed off by Brooks. Read more here<http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/nov/06/news-international-3m-missing-emails>and here<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-29920872>.
  * Mazher Mahmood, the former News of the World journalist known as the ‘fake sheikh’, failed in a legal bid <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/11216839/Mazher-Mahmood-lawyers-fail-to-win-injunction-against-BBC-Panorama-documentary.html> to gag a forthcoming Panorama programme about his activities which was broadcast last week and was compelling viewing. It can be viewed here. Mahmood was declared an untrustworthy witness by a judge last July.
  * A News of the World reporter became the first journalist from Rupert Murdoch’s UK company to be convicted by a jury of conspiring with a public official to commit misconduct in a public office, a verdict with grave implications for News Corporation. A Daily Star reporter was acquitted at the same Old Bailey trial. Read more here<http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/cheers-daily-star-journalist-cleared-payments-trial-stunned-silence-former-now-reporter-first>
  * A former investigations editor at the Sunday Mirror, Graham Johnson, became the second Trinity Mirror journalist to be convicted of phone hacking after pleading guilty. The court heard that he had been instructed in the hacking technique by a senior colleague. Read more here<http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2014/nov/06/mirror-editor-pleads-guilty-phone-hacking-graham-johnson>.

Press Regulation

As well as the numerous criminal trials taking place there has also been much development in the new system of press regulation as recommended by Lord Justice Leveson. The Press Regulation Panel<mailto:http://www.theguardian.com/media/greenslade/2014/oct/31/press-regulation-leveson-report> as created by the Royal Charter on press regulation became a legal entity on November 3rd.

Also earlier this month, Walter Merricks was appointed the Chair of IMPRESS. IMPRESS is the press self-regulator which (unlike IPSO) is not owned and dominated by the big newspaper groups. Once he has recruited the rest of his board, IMPRESS will then have to decide whether they ask for recognition under the Royal Charter.

I hope you have found this update interesting and useful. As ever we are hugely grateful of your continued support.
