Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship: A Comparative Study of Turkish and Chinese Speaking Small Businesses in London

Abstract: This presentation will report on the findings of a study on how entrepreneurs' socio-cultural backgrounds influence the entrepreneurial orientation of firms and how this in turn influences firm growth. This study was conducted with particular reference to Turkish and Chinese speaking small firms in London, operating in a variety of sectors including manufacturing, retailing, and catering. The presentation will shed some insights into the socio-cultural environment of the ethnic businesses and argue that not only co-ethnic customers and competitors but also both mainstream customers and competitors have a bearing on the entrepreneurial orientation of ethnic firms. Their entrepreneurial orientation and survival strategies are the result of the interplay between the changes in ethnic and mainstream business environments. The presentation will also share the differences between Turkish and Chinese speaking ethnic entrepreneurs in terms of their use of different networks, survival and competitive strategies.
