Oh dear! I’d read Principle 8 as meaning that HER and EH/HE information might include physical resources (such as reference books) as well as digital data and
that public access to these needs to be safeguarded. So a defence against the relentless pressure to dispose of all our supporting paper records.
Interpretation of the HIAS Principles is completely dependent on individual perceptions/context as has already become apparent in earlier discussions on other
of the Principles! This may be a good thing….
On resourcing - if there is a move towards submitting a national funding bid to support all the HERs in this or similar sorts of project, should one of the elements
include funding to get the remaining HERs online through Heritage Gateway, since this is one of the major disparities between the haves and have-nots? And while I’m dreaming, I’d like an HER Assistant and Surrey needs GIS, please Santa.
Can I also say that this is the first E-conference that I’ve actually been able to follow in its entirety – not through lack of understanding (I hope!) but I
usually have to bail out halfway through and get on with the day job!

Julia

To hopefully clarify this and not create any further “Red Herrings”.
Principle 8 is a general principle intended to cover making or improving linkages between digital data records (e.g. HERs and EH/HE) and digital and physical material archives
(e.g. ADS, receiving museums).
So no intention to add to HER responsibility for material holdings.

Morning all
I fear I’m opening a can of worms, chasing a red herring and mixing my metaphors – but I’ve had another look at the Principles and noticed number 8. What exactly are we talking about in way of “material archives”?
Is this also to be an HER responsibility, at least for “material” that doesn’t make it into the English Heritage Archive? We won’t be the only HER going through the painful shrinkage process and having to justify every piece of paper we hold on to. And as
for “safe repositories accessible to the public…”
Maybe I’m too concerned about this, but can anyone clarify what is intended by this Principle, in practical terms?
