Our people at the new Charles Perkins Centre are using the University’s internationally recognised academic credentials to ease the global burden of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions including not only health and medical approaches, but also sociological, political, economic, philosophical, cultural and historical approaches as well. Through a unique collaboration of academics, we are scrutinising and revising existing approaches to the treatment of these metabolic and social conditions, to improve health outcomes in Australia and worldwide.

 

To contribute to this important work, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences seeks a high-calibre scholar for this new and exciting position that offers considerable scope for leadership. The University of Sydney seeks to appoint a Chair in one of the following areas: Public Health Ethics, Sociology of Health and Illness, or Political Science. The successful candidate will be appointed in the relevant discipline within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and will establish a program of research within the Politics, Governance and Ethics research theme of the Charles Perkins Centre; a unique, collaborative initiative across all disciplines at the University of Sydney whose mission is to ease the burden of obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and related conditions. We are looking to appoint someone who can have a transformative impact on the field of political and ethical analysis of health issues in the University and beyond, and in particular, someone who can engage with and leverage the multidisciplinary environment of the Charles Perkins Centre.

 

You will draw upon your active research program to lead the development of the research agenda at the Charles Perkins Centre, employing your experience in attracting research funding to consolidate and extend the University’s international reputation in health-related research. An experienced teacher and mentor, you will develop capacity through the training of research students and excellence in teaching.

 

To be successful, you will have a distinguished publication record at the highest international level, and a genuine interest in multidisciplinary research as it pertains to the key research themes of the Charles Perkins Centre. It is also expected that you can demonstrate a commitment to the widest dissemination of your research to policy, media and the wider public.

 

The successful candidate will take a leading role in the development of the research agenda at the Charles Perkins Centre. Experienced at attracting large scale research funding, you will consolidate and extend the University’s international reputation in outstanding humanities and social sciences research.

 

TERM AND REMUNERATION

The position is full-time continuing, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.
