Dear Simon,

There were very probably Volkstheater parodies of the work, most notably in Vienna, and if texts have survived, something may have been written on them, e.g. in Nestroyana or in Peter Branscombe’s unpublished dissertation: ‘The connexions between drama and music in the Viennese popular theatre from the opening of the Leopoldstädter Theater (1781) to Nestroy's opera parodies (ca 1855), with special reference to the forms of parody, 2 vols, 1976 (there are copies in Senate House Library and in the Wienbibliothek in Vienna). There’s also a list of parodies at the back of the Reclam volume ‘Parodien des Wiener Volktheaters’ (1986).

Kind regards

Judith Beniston

Dear collective wisdom,

I am doing some research into Carl Maria von Weber and the various literary spin-offs which appeared following the success of Der Freischütz.  Does anyone know if anything has been written on this genre, e.g. Samiel oder die Wunderpille (1824), Moritz Reichenbach’s Freischützfunken (1829-30)?

With many thanks,
