The Faculty of Health & Social Care at The Open University presents this free lunchtime seminar:

Medical Detection Dogs

Developing new methodology to assist medics in the early diagnosis and management of human disease

Dr Claire Guest, animal behaviourist and CEO of the Medical Detection Dogs charity presents an overview of their ground breaking research into the canine olfactory detection of metabolic disease and cancer in humans.

The seminar will cover both sides of the charity’s work; an expanding program of medical alert assistance dogs, who are trained and partnered to alert individuals with complex health conditions prior to the onset of a life threatening medical emergency, and the research into cancer detection by sniffer dogs, (including a live demonstration, by one of the bio detection dogs).

Claire will discuss their current clinical studies;

·        a collaboration with Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust is a proof of principle study to determine dogs can detect the breath odour changes associated with early onset breast cancer;

·        in partnership with Milton Keynes Foundation Hospital, explores the olfactory detection of prostate cancer from urine samples to proffer the speed and accuracy of canine screening is a significant improvement on the rates recorded by some traditional medical diagnostic tests.

This inspiring presentation will reveal the potential that trained dogs have to assist in the management of complex health conditions, and expose the challenges faced in the drive to find a reliable, cheap and non-invasive method for second line screening of early stage cancers.
