Michaelmas term
Introduction to Statistics (SPSS I)-
20th & 21st November 2014
This course will introduce participants to the manipulation and management of data in the SPSS Windows environment. Participants will develop the confidence to manipulate data files in order to summarise data
numerically and graphically and to perform simple statistical procedures including formal tests of hypotheses of interest. This course is aimed at researchers and research students, with little experience of Windows computing.
Secondary Data Analysis 28 November 2014
This course introduces the skills and techniques involved in sourcing and analysing secondary data. The course consists of two parts. The first part is concerned with using the internet to discover secondary
data sources and other material both in the UK and in other countries. The major British social surveys will be covered. Online access to the UK census data will also be demonstrated. The second part of the course explores in detail two publicly available
datasets, the Home Office Offenders Index birth cohort series and the ESRC British Household Panel survey. The course will show methods of merging and aggregating datasets to produce information sources suitable for secondary analysis.
Questionnaire Design, Validity and reliability –
1st December 2014
This course will provide students with the tools required to design questionnaires in an efficient and effective manner. Examples of good and bad practice; interview schedule vs. self-completion forms and
structured vs. semi-structured instruments will be given, along with an overview and examples of the important concepts of testing validity and reliability. Consideration of on-line surveys will also be given.
