Dear Leslie,
I echo everything Marije Davidson has said and would take a similar approach.

Kind Regards

Hi Lesley,

As Dave Small says, Access to Work may be able to help with the extra costs of support, but it may not be practical to get someone in just for helping your employee in and out of her car. It could well be considered a reasonable adjustment for the University to make to provide support with getting in and out of the car. Given that the employee was the one who requested this support from the porters she may not be worried about sensitive or health and safety issues. Do you think that the porters will have concerns?

Have you asked the employee whether there are any issues to be aware of and whether porters would need training? All that may be needed is a briefing by her to porters’ staff.

Best wishes,

Marije Davidson

Hi

Funding through Access to work may be available.

Hello

We have a female member of staff that we have purchased a wheelchair for and it is kept at work. Currently this member of staff comes to work with her son who goes and collects the wheelchair and helps her in and out of the car at the start and end of the day. The son now has a job and will no longer be able to help her with this. She has asked if the Porters would be able to help. I am sure it would be no problem asking them to bring the chair out to her but I am concerned about them helping her in and out of the car – both from a sensitivity and health and safety point of view.

Would this be something we should be assisting her with? Is there likely to be any funding available for her to employ someone to act in this capacity?

Lesley
