Subject: Attitudes to Accents of English - Exeter lecturer on BBC

My colleague, Dr Zoe Boughton (who, among other things, is a co-editor of the JFLS), gave a very nice interview on BBC radio yesterday about attitudes towards regional accents (of English).
The topic arose because last week, the manager of the England football team (Roy Hodgson) seemed to imply that the new team captain, Wayne Rooney, wouldn't be able to give lectures, *due to his Liverpool accent*.
(Not that most footballers have to give lectures anyway - nor do most lecturers have to play international football matches!)

Here's a link to the programme:

The interview starts at about 01:10.28 into the programme.
