Abstract

Making ITS or traffic control systems operate effectively requires well defined specifications. Making products, or providing services to the traffic sector economically benefits from a one size fits all approach. In the field of (for example) structures there has been a high level of academic involvement in standards development. This has not occurred in Traffic Control & ITS. Arguably this low level of engagement constrains innovation and the application of new ideas. This symposium reviews the current unstable position of UK specs and standards and explores the changes that are happening and how these may either inform or benefit from research at centres such as CTS.
