Hi Louise,

I am watching the video right now. I don’t think there is any particular need for British accents personally as I can’t see any major US bias. Very useful video, I appreciate your effort on this.

Best wishes,
Masud

Hi there

Yes, I am South African....I would guess the "USA bias" comment was made because of the accents of the characters, as well as the reference to Pearl Harbour.

It is going to be quite difficult to please all nationalities....many of our learners are from Ghana, Uganda, etc. (so not South African at all), but study in South Africa. We might do a similar video with speakers speaking Swahili only.

I guess I could make a video and only use British accents (the software does allow that)...would that make it easier on the ear for UK-learners?

Thanks for the feedback!

Louise

Hi Everyone,

Louise, great job! I’ve added your video to my own training materials.

At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, may I ask what the “USA bias” is? According to Louise’ contact info, she is in South Africa! I don’t recall seeing anything in the video that ties it specifically to the USA, except, perhaps for the accent of the narrator.

Like Libbie, I also point to the MANTRA materials. I don’t care where something comes from as long as it’s good and relevant to my users. They seem to feel the same way.

Hi Sebastian ... I understand your hesitancy, but just so you know, here in the states I regularly recommend and use the training program MANTRA for local practitioners, students and researchers, MANTRA is maintained at the University of Edinburgh/EDINA as well as many of the other training and information resources at the DCC. I figure that managing and ensuring the long term usability of data is a global issue and any contributions from the experts helps us all. I haven't encountered any resistance or feelings about bias so maybe give it a try with your community and see how it goes.
best, libbie

It’s an interesting video, but I wonder whether there might be some resistance due to the USA bias if we used it here.
Perhaps we should try it on some communities and see how they get on.
