Reference number: PER 2014/337

The School of Design and Crafts (HDK) is one of three departments in the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg. We have our roots in a historical tradition - the school was founded in 1848 - at the same time that we develop in pace with the surrounding world. Today, we provide education of designers, artisans and art and crafts teachers, and we conduct research and educate researchers in these subjects.

HDK’s programmes in design are based on a holistic perspective of design, and focus particularly on the joint design competence at the core of all design activities. We have created design programmes that have broken the boundaries between the traditional areas of design. Our students have the possibility to work across boundaries and in-depth with artefacts and services in a broader overlapping field of design, which includes environments, processes, structures and systems in a post-disciplinary spirit where great emphasis is placed on social and societal aspects of design.

HDK’s design programmes currently consist of one programme, Design, in the first cycle (undergraduate) and three programmes in the second cycle (graduate): Design, Child Culture Design (CCD) and a programme in cooperation with the School of Business, Economics and Law: Business & Design. HDK also has a third cycle (doctoral) education in design with some 10 doctoral students and actively works to build up a research environment. We also offer stand-alone courses in design.

Subject area

Design specialising on design studies

Specific subject description

Design Studies at HDK covers a broad field - from the reflecting practitioner’s knowledge formation concerning the design activity to the discussion and theory formation concerning design and design activities - inscribed in social and cultural phenomena in society, historically and in the present. Design Studies is in other words a field with cross and mutual influences from several disciplines, fields of knowledge and subject areas - i.e. design seen in a broader and deeper historical, social, cultural and theoretical perspective.

Design Studies at HDK is an area of knowledge under development. Our premise is the holistic view of design activity and design competence that characterises our programmes, a starting point that is independent of the design-orientation, but with a clearly society-oriented and humanistic profile where responsibility and ethical standpoints play a major role. Design is a changing concept that reflects the surrounding contexts’ variability, and we safeguard critically reflecting discussion and theory formation on design’s own terms, without being locked into pre-determined ideologies and doctrines.

As a professor, you will participate in the work with education, supervision, administration and various forms of development work and expected to be an active part of the faculty as well as accustomed to work in teams. You will be an important cog in the change work directed at the development of so-called complete environments, i.e. care for the exchange between basic education, research and society in general.
