Ending disrespect and abuse during facility-based childbirth

Every woman has the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including the right to dignified, respectful care during pregnancy and childbirth. However, across the world many women experience disrespectful, abusive, or neglectful treatment during childbirth in facilities. These practices can violate women’s rights, deter women from seeking and using maternal health care services and can have implications for their health and well-being. A new WHO statement is receiving endorsement worldwide.

Prioritizing mHealth strategies for universal health coverage

A new open access article in Science drawing from seminal work in health systems analysis, presents a novel framework for visualizing and planning how mHealth innovations can be applied to help surmount common and persistent constraints along the pathways toward the achievement of universal health coverage. It responds to the need to prioritize investments and opportunities, in the context of a growing interest in use of telecommunications technologies, to help scale up and integrate interventions of known efficacy.

WHO launches programme to improve antenatal care in Mozambique

Antenatal care is an important factor in ensuring women deliver their babies safely, and that those babies are healthy. This feature story describes how 10 clinics across Mozambique will be providing full antenatal care services by the end of 2015. It is also highlights the importance of a “person-centred” approach to health care, ensuring that everyone has access to the services they need, when they need them.

SRH at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA69)

RHR was an active participant in events surrounding the 69th UN General Assembly in New York. At a high-level event on protection from gender-based violence in emergency settings hosted by US Secretary of State John Kerry, Dr Flavia Bustreo, ADG of Family Women’s and Children’s Health highlighted work on strengthening the health sector response to violence. Other events include the announcement of the US$4bn Global Financing Facility for reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and the Global citizen event.

Workshop on WHO recommendations for task-shifting in maternal and newborn health

In a two-day workshop in the Republic of Slovenia, policy-makers from seven European countries were guided through the WHO recommendations, as well as considering their application to their settings. Participants also learned about the innovative “Evidence-to-Decision” frameworks developed by DECIDE.

Partners’ meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance in N. gonorrhoeae and STI surveillance

 

25-27 August 2014, RHR convened a partners’ meeting in Geneva to advance the work on the public health challenges of controlling gonococcal antimicrobial resistance and strengthen STI surveillance to improve broader reproductive and maternal health outcomes. If not addressed, the increasing resistance of gonorrhoea will result in serious sexual and reproductive health consequences. Urgent action is needed, including strengthening surveillance efforts.

Global Technical Partners’ Meeting for the Validation of the Elimination of Mother-to-Child-Transmission (EMTCT) of HIV and Syphilis

22-23 September. Some 50 technical partners working on EMTCT of HIV and syphilis came together to review global minimum standards and processes for EMTCT validation; review operational tools to support regional and country processes; and outline next steps for collaboration with global technical partners, including resource mobilization and advocacy. Meeting participants reviewed and discussed draft tools for data quality and impact assessments, laboratory assessment, human rights/gender/and community engagement, costing, and governance. Following input received at the meeting, each of these tools will be revised so that they can be piloted in several validation exercises planned from October 2014 onwards.  For more information, please contact [log in to unmask], or [log in to unmask]

Ending the cycle of violence against girls

Dhaka, Bangladesh. 23-25 September 2014. Parliamentarians from 12 countries met and agreed on concrete actions that they would take in their individual countries to prevent violence against girls including early and forced marriage. They agreed to this by formulating laws and supporting the implementation and monitoring of actions in conformity with the laws.

UN Human Rights Council passes resolution on FGM

September 2014. The 27th session of the UN Human Rights Council, adopts resolution A/HRC/27/L.12 on intensifying global efforts and sharing good practices to effectively eliminate female genital mutilation.

Reproductive Health Library (RHL) available on iPad app

The WHO Reproductive Health Library (RHL) can now be accessed via a new iPad app. It is designed to dynamically pull content from the WHO website and operates in “off-line” mode to allow remote access to information.

RHL is an electronic review journal containing summaries of systematic reviews on sexual and reproductive health interventions and includes suggestions on how to implement the evidence in health-care practice.
