medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Dear Ken,

The closest thing to what you are looking for is probably The Qur’an A New Annotated Translation by AJ Droge (Equinox 2013), although it is still not as helpful as the Oxford Annotated NRSV; the annotations are pretty slim. Yusuf Ali’s translation and commentary is much more robust, giving a more or less “mainline” sunni commentary to the entire Qur’an, and thus may not fit your course. In lieu of an ideal annotated translation, I would suggest using Carl Ernst’s How to Read the Qur’an (North Carolina 2013) and/or the Cambridge Companion to the Qur’an (2006). They are both invaluable resources for undergraduates with no background. And of course Michael Sells Approaching the Qur’an (2007) is amazing, although it does not approach the later suras.

All the best,

Nate

I recognize that this question is a bit beyond the purview of the list, but I knew this community of scholars would have some solid suggestions: I will be teaching an introductory class on Islam (history, theology, exploration of the central texts), and want the students to buy an English translation of the Qur’an (or an edition with English and Arabic) -  ideally I am looking for the functional equivalent to the Oxford Annotated NRSV, any suggestions?

My great thanks,

Ken A. Grant
