BOOK LAUNCH: From Distant Suffering to Freedom of Speech: Human Rights and the Media – Dr Ekaterina Balabanova
School of the Arts Library, 19 Abercromby Square, University of Liverpool
Tuesday 4 November 2014, 5pm to 7pm
In recent years there has been an explosion in the usage and visibility of the language of human rights, but what does this mean for the role of the media? For evolving ideas about human rights? And for the prospect of shared cosmopolitan
values?
Professor John Corner, University of Leeds, will introduce these issues in the context of the ‘state of the art’ in the field of media studies and political communication. Dr Ekaterina Balabanova, University of Liverpool, will discuss key
ideas from her new book The Media and Human Rights: The Cosmopolitan Promise, Routledge 2014. The event will be chaired by Professor Kay Richardson, University of Liverpool, and will be followed by a Q&A and Drinks Reception.
