Job opportunity: Doctoral researcher for “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme.

The Media and Communication Department (SCOM) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is calling for applications for one Turkish-speaking full-time doctoral researcher to work within the “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme. This researcher will strengthen an already existing research team of four scholars. Prospective PhD candidates are hereby invited to apply. The deadline for submitting applications is 31 October 2014.

Project description

The VUB “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme investigates the role of Cypriot community media in relation to conflict in Cyprus, focussing on the 40 year division of the island. Different research projects within this general “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme focus on particular aspects of the relationship between community media and conflict in Cyprus, although they all combine the study of community media production processes, the content these community media produce and how this content is received by members of the general (Cypriot) public. When short-listed, applicants will be expected to propose their own research project within the general “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme.

Profile

A successful applicant must:

·         have an demonstrable interest in studying the relationship between media, democracy and conflict,

·         hold a Master’s degree in Media and Communication studies, Journalism Studies, or a comparable degree,

·         have obtained excellent study results,

·         be fluent in English and in Turkish,

·         be knowledgeable about the Cyprus political and cultural context,

·         be willing to stay in Cyprus for (a) longer period(s),

·         qualify for employment at a Belgium university as a PhD grant student (“doctoraatsbursaal”) (with a preference for being a holder of an EU passport, or for being able to obtain a EU passport within a reasonably short term),

·         be self-motivated, flexible, and capable of working in a multi-national team

Offer

Full-time research grant for one year at the VUB, renewable on an annual basis for a maximum total of four years. Renewal is subject to the agreement of the supervisor(s).

Remuneration is at the level of a PhD grant holder (“doctoraatsbursaal”) at a Flemish university, i.e. (approximately) € 1.800 net per month.

No paid employment with any other organization is allowed.

Successful applicants are required to enrol at the VUB as PhD student, with a research project that is part of the general “Cypriot Community Media and Conflict” research programme. The possibility of a joint PhD with a Cypriot university will be investigated.

The Media and Communication Department of the VUB is committed to creating and supporting a diverse work environment and is an equal opportunity employer.
