Founder of the" Hacked Off" campaign to talk at the University of Huddersfield Prof Brian Cathcart, founder of the campaign against "hacking" by journalists which led to setting up of the Leveson Inquiry, will be speaking at the University of Huddersfield later this month. Cathcart is a critic of the new press regulator, the Independent Press Standards Organisation (IPSO), and supports the proposals put forward by the Leveson inquiry which have still to be implemented. The talk has been organised by the Journalism and Media department at the University of Huddersfield as part of a series of public engagement events, and is free and open to the public. Dr Stephen Dorril, senior lecturer in journalism at the University, said: 'Over the past year we have the disquieting spectacle of editors and journalists being sent to prison. And we have seen politicians and other figures resign from positions of influence following press exposes. The debate on press freedom and regulation is still ongoing and is unresolved.' 'Will the new self-regulatory body (IPSO) lead to a more responsible press or will intrusions into privacy not in the public interest continue? Cathcart is one of the leading authorities on this area and at the centre of this heated debate. It is sure to lead to a very lively talk and discussion, and I hope people will come to put their views on the subject.'
