“And you’re not coming out until you’ve finished the whole paper…!”

I think the teachers would be quite happy with that!

I read this too quickly and thought you meant cages for the students to sit in to do their exams if they brought their phone to the exam room!!!

We are investigating the purchase and use of a ‘mobile phone detector’ at around £700 - £800.  A local school has offered to show me how their one works.

Allowing students to keep phones in their bags is our plan for this year, especially as I have had a confirmation from CIE that we will be allowed a ‘dispensation’ to do so (wow – a outbreak of common sense from an AO!).  This will mean enforcing a zero tolerance about phones going off in a bag or being found on a candidate’s person, and we will ask candidates to show us their phones before entering the hall to ensure they are switched off.  We are also thinking about having cages (like you see bringing deliveries to shops) so that we can isolate a ringing phone by taking the cage out of the room – all the candidates whose items are in that cage will then have to empty their bags so we can find the culprit!

As for phone watches, shall we just ask students to ‘raise both hands’ to be inspected as they enter the exam room?

The issue with “smart” watches is a major one. Most actually connect via an associated mobile phone, so I presume this is why the JCQ are cracking down on mobiles in the room even if they are not in the candidates possession. Frankly I do not have the ability to tell a “smart” watch from a conventional one and have no wish to start having to deny candidates watches in the exam rooms.

Subject: Mobile phones in the exam room?

Hi

·         Invigilators must ensure that candidates do not bring into the examination room potential technological/web enables sources of information such as ipods, mobile phones, MP3/4 players, and wrist watches which have a data storage device.

How do you all manage this?

I am wondering, if anyone still allows Phones in the examination room in any circumstances as long as they are switched off or what systems you have put in place?

Kind Regards
