Hi Sara

We are a huge site with limited numbers of lockers and up until September 2014 we have always permitted phones to be stored in students' bags at the back of the venue providing they are switched off. This was fine till i-phones and smartphones became the norm and experienced several students getting penalised because although the phone was switched off, the alarm had not been deactivated so would often go off., Fortunately, students managed to escape with a warning from the Awarding Organisations.

However, this year a phone went off and a subsequent malpractice incident arose and I am pleased to say that after 5 years of begging for this to happen, our new Principal decreed no bags in exam venues at all. We now have a dedicated storeroom (which is actually where the exam chairs and tables are stored when not in use, so during exam times is empty). The venue is locked by a member of student support and opened again just before the exam finishes and we had no further incidents last season.

In fact, one Year 10 student came up to me and asked why her bag had to go into the 'cupboard' and when I explained that we were trying to limit any possibility of malpractice and her losing her paper, she thought about it for a couple of mins then said - 'that's really cool miss' and went off very happy into her exam.

Its working great, the exam venue is now no longer cluttered and even CIE are happy :)

Good luck. I have not come across the posh watches though - interested in anyone's opinions on how to monitor this

Kind regards

Anna

Subject: Mobile phones in the exam room?

Hi

· Invigilators must ensure that candidates do not bring into the examination room potential technological/web enables sources of information such as ipods, mobile phones, MP3/4 players, and wrist watches which have a data storage device.

How do you all manage this?

I am wondering, if anyone still allows Phones in the examination room in any circumstances as long as they are switched off or what systems you have put in place?

Kind Regards
