Saturday 8 November 2014

10am-5pm
£50 (£40 SCRSS members) Includes
deluxe buffet lunch, tea/coffee

Fourth speaker this year will be Andrew Jameson, an exchange student in Moscow in the 1960s, who met dissidents of the time and returned with hi-fi recordings of them reading from their works. His talk will include extracts from his collection. Please book as soon as possible to secure a place – and pass on information to anyone you think might be interested.

This year's seminar explores different aspects of Russian culture and experience in the period under Khrushchev known as The Thaw (circa 1953-64). In the USSR this was a time of de-Stalinisation, relaxation of censorship and opening up of contacts with the outside world. The seminar includes four lectures, tours of the SCRSS library and refreshments. Places are limited to a maximum of 25, so early booking and payment is recommended.

Lecture 1: Housing and Planning Across the 'Iron Curtain': Anglo-Soviet Interchanges in the Khrushchev Era
Professor Stephen V Ward, Oxford Brookes University

Lecture 2: Visual Art in the Khrushchevian Thaw Years c 1953-1964
Christine Lindey, Birkbeck College, University of London

Lecture 3: Sex, Cowardice and Corruption: Soviet Cinema During the Thaw
John Riley, writer, teacher, curator and broadcaster, specialising in film and music

Lecture 4: Russian Life and People in the Thaw period
Andrew Jameson, translator, consultant on Russian language and culture
