Last announcement for session on methods of mapping contentious politics

CFP: Methods of Mapping Political Contention and Activism, AAG, 21-25 April 2015, Chicago (Illinois)

Human geographers have made important contributions to the literature on resistance, activism, and contention. They have played a distinctive role in showing how space matters in constituting social movements and shaping their dynamics. This session aims to build on this momentum by inviting scholars with interests in methods to assess and evaluate the spatial make-up of activism and resistance.

We invite scholars who operationalize key concepts like place, networks, scale, and geographical diffusion. We encourage scholars from both qualitative and quantitative traditions. This could involve tools like geographical information systems and include methods such as participant observation, archival research,  network analysis, and so on. Our hope is to use this session as an opportunity to refine existing approaches and to introduce new ideas for mixing methods in the study of the spatial make up of social movements.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words via email to Sander van Haperen ([log in to unmask]), Walter Nicholls ([log in to unmask]), and Justus Uitermark ([log in to unmask]) by 17 October 2014. Also, please forward this message to those who may be interested in this session.

Thanks very much,
