Hi Owen,
I agree with John – first step should be a desk based review of the sites and this should guide the requirement for further monitoring or not.
I did this at Wakefield 7 years ago and for about 130 of the 150 former landfills a decision was made for no further monitoring. This was mainly due to the fact that there were no buildings anywhere near them [they had been spiking these landfills on site
for 10 years before I came!].
For sites where you do have off site boreholes [and hopefully knowledge of their construction] you could monitor these to inform a detailed risk
assessment. As the majority of sites don’t have these [they are either on site or lost] I bought a high sensitivity gas clam to put into buildings [preferably in the sub floor void if they have one] to inform the risk assessment. Boreholes are just too expensive
in my view for the majority of sites although for known gassing landfills adjacent to housing I have had these installed and monitored.
Hope this helps
Dave

If you have not already done so you might want to take a step back first and re-look at the conceptual model and re-visit / update the risk assessments (s-p-r
linkages) for each of these site. This will then guide your monitoring regime and indeed consider whether any monitoring is required – the source term hazard may have reduced over the years on some of these sites to a level where reduced or no monitoring is
required.

Subject: Alternative ground gas monitoring techniques
Dear All,
In the London Borough of Hounslow, we have a substantial number of former landfill sites of a range of ages, sizes and fill types. The monitoring that we have done at these
sites is also pretty variable. The best monitored sites feature well installed boreholes with permanently
in situ gas taps but in other locations, less monitoring has been done, or monitoring was done some years ago using techniques that are no longer current. We are looking at doing some additional monitoring to check for off site gas migration risks. My
question is what is the best technique to use? The standard approach would be to commission some monitoring boreholes but is there value in alternative techniques such as flux boxes or internal gas surveys of nearby buildings or infrastructure which might
allow us to sample across a wider area at the same cost.
Regards,
Owen
