The Scottish Council on Archives is pleased to announce the launch of SCARRS 2.0:
www.scottisharchives.org.uk/scarrs.
Since 2011, the SCARRS tool has served an immediately identifiable need by providing guidance on how local authorities in Scotland might best manage records both received from
outside and generated within. The initial schedules were published in two phases in 2010 and 2011, revised in 2013-14 and the current version (2.0) published in September 2014.
SCARRS is a tool that maps the typical records generated in support of the business activities of Scottish local authorities. It identifies statutory and regulatory retention
periods for those records where these exist and suggests typical retention periods based on common practice and/or business requirements where statutory and regulatory periods do not exist.
Before utilising the schedules we recommend you download and consult our new guidance:
www.scottisharchives.org.uk/scarrs/guidance.pdf. This provides an introduction to SCARRS and how best to implement the tool. You will also find sector route maps for different types of organisations,
definitions and help with tricky concepts.
Best wishes,
Ben
