Dear Grant
It doesn't surprise me that OH in S'pore is physician centric, but it is sad. Great that you have assisted the university to develop an OH course, that is a start. It makes me so proud to see the impact my students and graduates have in the world of OH, both nationally and internationally. Do you need an external examiner - I would be happy to see if I could assist?

In addition to being made a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) last year have recently been made a National Teaching Fellow of the HEA which will give me £10,000 for my own CPD. Submitting an application involved a lot of work and when I was writing it at 2.00am in the morning I did begin to wonder if it was worth the effort as the competition is very tough. Each university in the UK can put forward three academics. It is a scheme which has been in existence for 14 years and fifty Fellowships are awarded annually. The University of London value it so highly they actually give anyone they put forward £3000 just because they have been selected to be put forward for HEA consideration, if they get it that is a further £10,000. LSBU don't do that - we have no money! The presentation is a very posh affair, this year at Liverpool Cathedral. I will be going with the university Pro-Vice Chancellor - it will be an opportunity to bend his ear.

Have a look at this link:
https://www.heacademy.ac.uk/professional-recognition/awards/national-teaching-fellowship-scheme-ntfs/why-become-ntf.

I have just applied for a travel scholarship to go to Australia to look at vocational rehab and see what lessons we can learn from them and use in the UK. Somehow, as the impact OH have is undervalued I may not get it but you have to be in it to win it as my head of department keeps reminding me!

Best

Anne

Dear Anne,

Getting the University to organize a course for OH nurses is tough egg to crack. Indeed Singapore did have an OH Course of its own but it was very much a taster course of 2 weeks duration and did not measure any competency or academic understanding of the discipline.

I have developed a course for the University at Advanced Diploma level and this will be considered by the academic board at some point in the future, but I think I will have returned permanently to the UK by then. At present I am preparing my team to take the certification exam with the American Board of OH Nurses and they will take this next year at some point.

OH is very much a young discipline here and a Cinderella one at that. It is very much physician centric and nurses are not seen as healthcare professional partners here. I have only been accepted as an equal by OH physicians and the School of Medicine through my skills and knowledge and experience.

Still along way to go but Rome wasn't built in a day as they say!

Dear Grant

Delighted that you are involved in educating OH Physicians - how about getting the university to establish programmes for OH Nurses? I think they had a programme many years ago but I believe it was discontinued.

Dear Colleagues,

I have been asked to give a series of lectures to trainee Occupational Health Physicians at the local university here, which is a great honour for a UK OH Nurse. This is the second time I have been asked to teach at the university - so I guess they liked my last lectures.

As Singapore is a very small country in SE Asia there is very little in the way of reliable statistics looking at "Fatigue & Work Performance". Is there any resources/Information you could send me or direct me to regarding this in the UK that I could use in the lectures?

Any help, great or small will be wonderfully appreciated.

Many thanks
