HLF only ask for three competitive tenders, so there is no reason as far as HLF are concerned  for 13 organisations to be long listed.

Probably is a sign of an organisation that can’t make decisions???? If they have 12 people who all need to see hard copies of 13 companies……  those poor trees.

Mark, a shocking way to procure....perhaps HLF could offer clearer guidance to prevent this.

Also, I have been asked for 4 hard copies of our enviro policy when tendering to one council...

Dear Gem -land - Re: Free Pitching

I found the recent contributions to this issue both enlightening and useful - thank you all!

There is an active HLF tender for a fort near Exeter which may be worth noting. The list of design companies has been whittled down from 16 (sixteen) to 13 (thirteen) - with these lucky many invited to attend site. 12 (twelve) hard copies of the tender return are required to be submitted by each at interview. Is this reasonable?

I (and a grateful forest) think we know the answer.

Dear GEM

I seem to remember GEM ran a training day a few years back in London on just this topic – I didn’t attend but did put together a powerpoint, I think on drawing up a brief or was it a contract?  I think the idea was for the resources from the day to be made available online, via the GEM website. Was Emma King involved?

A quick trawl through my present computer files hasn’t revealed either email correspondence or a powerpoint, but it was a while ago.

I’d be happy to work with you Sandra to put something together in the SW – it is time we had another freelancers day down here.

Best wishes,

Indeed this is a controversial area (hello Mark!) but in the defence of many Gemmers – most people have had very little training or experience in this area and may not appreciate quite what putting together a bid may entail. Procurement is a thorny area on both sides. I’ve been there and got quite a few T-shirts myself and a few rapped knuckles myself.

A Gem training day? Perhaps in partnership with AHI?

What do you think folks?. If there’s demand (and we can work out the finances) I’d be happy to help pull something together….. (a last gesture before I step down as a GEM trustee next week!)
