Call for Papers - Annual Meeting of the Society for Applied Anthropology - Pittsburgh - March 24-28, 2015

Roos Willems (University of Leuven; [log in to unmask]) and Alexander Rödlach (Creighton University; [log in to unmask]) are putting together a panel on refugee resettlement and rebuilding social networks. We invite colleagues who are interested in joining this panel to send us a preliminary title and abstract of up to 100 words by September 30, 2015. As we are planning a joint publication of the revised papers after the meeting, we particularly encourage those among you who are willing to develop the oral paper into a publishable manuscript. Please share this CFP with colleagues who might be interested.

Panel Title: The Crux of Refugee Resettlement: Rebuilding Social Networks

Panel Abstract:

Resettlement to a third country is the only option for refugees when repatriation or local integration turns out to be impossible. During the resettlement process, refugees construct networks with kin, ethnic members, neighbors, and colleagues, which provide social capital and support during financial, employment, personal, health, or other problems. This panel discusses various aspects of this rebuilding of existing and creation of new social networks from the point of view of refugees themselves, those who assist them such as NGOs and community or civil society organizations, as well as policy makers. Papers address issues such as refugees' agency versus structural constraints, dispersing versus concentrating policies, bridging versus bonding social network, and the role of religious organizations, resettlement agencies, and community associations.
