There are four Friday Streets in Suffolk, possibly more than any other county. One of them (in Mildenhall) has records going back to 1450. While looking into this I noted this comment in PN Glouc 2.176: “a frequent name for roads leading to gallows etc.”. This raises two questions:
1. Is there any hard evidence for the gallows connection? I cannot find any such examples.
2. What does “etc.” mean? (guillotines?!)
