Immigration and the Making of British Identity

Wednesday 24 September 2014, 6-7.30pm

The REP, Centenary Square, Broad Street, Birmingham, B1 2EP

This autumn the British Academy's series of debates held across the UK looks at immigration, and how it affects Britain culturally, politically and economically.

The British Academy Debates bring together evidence and insight to illuminate some of the biggest questions facing society today and demonstrate the importance of humanities and social
science research in addressing these issues. Join our panels of academics, commentators and leading figures as they explore different aspects of immigration, and seek to distinguish reality from myth in this emotive and often controversial topic for an increasingly
 diverse Britain.

What does it mean to be British? How has a British identity been constructed, historically, culturally and nationally? In what ways has Britain’s current and historic position on the
international stage affected her identity? Does it matter if different communities maintain and promote their own cultural identity? And to what extent does this impact on our definition of being British?

Chair: Mary Rhodes, Broadcaster and Presenter BBC Midlands Today

Confirmed Speakers Include:

Professor Robin Cohen, Emeritus Professor and Former Director of the International Migration Institute, University of Oxford

Professor Montserrat Guibernau, Queen Mary University, London

Professor John Solomos, University of Warwick

Dr Leah Bassel, University of Leicester
