Thursday, 13 November 2014 from 10:00 to 16:00
Kew, United Kingdom

Places are free

This conference is aimed at anyone involved or thinking about digitising their archival collections. It's also for people charged with managing digital assets or their online promotion.

It is the first of what is hoped to be an annual event, bringing together colleagues in the archival sector involved in the creation, management and dissemination of digitised collections.

There is a general recognition that digitising physical collections can open the door to wider interactions and a larger audience, and support income generation. However whilst the basic processes of digitisation are well understood, the management and promotion of assets is still a big challenge for many. This conference will bring together archive professionals who are actively involved in digitisation or have an aspiration to do so and discuss some of the challenges faced. As well as covering some of the basic principles we will look in more detail at topics such as cloud storage and crowd sourcing. The focus will be on practical advice, to support archives to develop plans and put them into action.

Delegates can choose whether to attend both or just one day, but workshops in Day 1 will be used to prepare delegates for Day 2.

Day 1: November 5th
Digitisation: why?
Why should archives make records digitally accessible? The first day will highlight a range of benefits including audience development, volunteer opportunities and income generation. It will also explore how these reasons can be used to build a business case and support funding and resourcing bids.

Day 2: November
Digitisation: how?

How do archives implement a successful digitisation programme? The second day will include a tour of The National Archives' state of the art facilities, explore the benefits of commercial contracting and in-house operations, and provide opportunities to ask questions of The National Archives' panel of experts.
