SciDev.Net supports freelancers in developing countries in Africa and elsewhere. Plus they're really lovely and helpful people - worth getting in touch!  Here's their page on training partnerships: http://www.scidev.net/global/content/work-with-us.html

Also B4FA runs a media fellowship for journalists / scicommers from Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda: http://b4fa.org/media-fellowship-programme/

Cheers

There is a science teachers' organisation in Nigeria called STAN.  My contact is no longer involved, I think, but if you investigate the ICASE (international association of science teacher orgs) website you'll find a contact.  There is a lot of sci com activity in South Africa - festivals, weeks and all sorts and there will be people from there on this list.

All best

Your colleague might like to check out the Mission X Train Like an Astronaut programme which has had some take up in Mozambique and South Africa and is looking to extend to other countries.  The website is www.trainlikeanastronaut.org and there is a great community of science communicators supporting the project and who share advice and ideas with each other on the online forum and through regular telephone conferences led by NASA.  The programme is targeted at students aged 8 to 12 but can be used flexibility and the main science themes are:  nutrition, space science, exercise, physiology.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] SciCom organisations in Africa

Dear Colleagues,

I'm teaching a short residential scicom course this week, and have a student from Nigeria who is asking whether I can put her in touch with science communication organisations in Nigeria or elsewhere in Africa.

She does a huge amount of work to support science communication in schools in her country, but would like to connect with other folk working in the field to share best practice/ get advice. She is also wondering whether there are any initiatives in the UK to mentor science communicators in Africa.

I've had a look around the web, but drawn a blank, so was wondering if anyone could please point me in the direction of some useful info?

Many thanks for your help!
Claire
