Studies and Language Teaching and Learning at NUI Galway, Ireland


Start Date: September 2014


As part of the newly-formed Italian Academy in NUI Galway,
applications are sought for a full-time PhD studentship in Italian and language
teaching and learning in NUI Galway. 


Area of Research: The PhD research will incorporate
an aspect of the teaching and learning of the Italian language with particular
emphasis on community-based programmes.


The
Italian Academy:

 

The Italian Academy, which will be
formally launched in autumn 2014, is the platform for outreach projects in
Italian in the community in the west of Ireland. It incorporates the Youth
Academy, (a programme for gifted primary school children); Community Based
Learning (student outreach in the community); transition-year courses for
secondary school students and other community initiatives developed by the
discipline of Italian in NUI Galway. The PhD student’s primary affiliation will
be to the Italian Academy and to the use of innovative teaching methodologies
for the benefit of the community in the Galway region. The Academy makes use of
innovative methodologies developed by the discipline of Italian in NUI Galway
such as online, blended learning; student service learning; multimedia chat
forums and audiovisual subtitling.[1]
The Academy encourages positive attitudes towards language learning amongst the
school-going population and facilitates the promotion of the Italian culture
and language in the west of Ireland.
