Hi Rebecca

Thank you for explaining your position on this and the need to be pragmatic.

You may be aware that the House of Illustration opened this summer in Kings Cross, therefore possibly on your map. It covers the art of illustration from history to the present day with a gallery, education space and active online presence. They may be interested in working with you or perhaps have advice about fund generation for this type of project.

Just another thought to add on a Saturday as a life-long learner: as well as early career illustrators those who have developed into new areas through continued professional development may also be interested! Happy to follow-up off-list.

Best regards

Cassie

Subject: Re: Free Pitching

Hi,

Speaking on behalf of those involved in the North London Museums Family Map, I am really sorry we didn't realise the issues around free pitching and are sorry to anyone we unintentionally insulted by our design brief. I agree we could do with more help in this area, as marketing is not something, as educators, we are trained or specialise in.

However, speaking frankly we are all small museum education departments. The money for the map is coming out of our education budgets and those are very limited- most don't even have a families' budget full stop. The map itself is a solution to the problem that we don't have any budget for family marketing and therefore struggle to reach local families with our offer.

The fee for the map is what we could afford. We do not have money on top of this to pay for pitches.

We understand that this means it is not financially viable for many designers and illustrators to apply.

Therefore we have been advertising this design brief primarily through colleges and early career illustrators. If anyone is interested in applying we are not looking for polished pitches but an idea of your style and approach, to see if it would suit our aims for a functional, family friendly and creative map. Please do not spend a large amount of time on it.

The fee offered in the design brief is what we can afford, but we are expecting to work closely with the chosen illustrator/ designer to support them and provide creative input. We also offer wide exposure in the Islington and Camden areas for the map, and a chance to work closely with many of the heritage organisations in this area.

If anyone is interested I am happy to answer questions at my work email [log in to unmask].

The final date for submissions is the 30th September. These can be send to myself via email or to Islington Museum, 245 St John Street, EC1V 4NB.

Have a lovely weekend

I would appreciate training on working with freelancers of all kinds to be honest.

If it could be non-London based (or if it is a full day to make it worth the travel costs) that would be much appreciated.

Indeed this is a controversial area (hello Mark!) but in the defence of many Gemmers – most people have had very little training or experience in this area and may not appreciate quite what putting together a bid may entail. Procurement is a thorny area on both sides. I’ve been there and got quite a few T-shirts myself and a few rapped knuckles myself.

A Gem training day? Perhaps in partnership with AHI?

What do you think folks?. If there’s demand (and we can work out the finances) I’d be happy to help pull something together….. (a last gesture before I step down as a GEM trustee next week!)

A good point well made Jason. I think the size of the final prize can be a factor that can make it worth taking a punt but often that is a gamble that freelancers and small businesses cannot take. Clearly some of those commissioning don’t fully appreciate what it is they asking people to undertake in terms of time and therefore money.....And don’t get me going about those who won’t give decent feedback to unsuccessful pitchers...adding insult to injury!

Not ranting, just stating fact...happy Friday all!

I was considering putting in a proposal for this until I read this:-

‘Please send a proposal for the design and layout. This should include a sample character, map layout and illustration of one or more of the cultural organisations.’

I would estimate the work to be done before even being considered for this job to be at least 4-5 hours. Over £100 worth of work at my normal rates for a job worth £350. Am I prepared to do this? No. Do I have any guarantee that my design work won’t be shown to the successful candidate and my ideas used without payment or credit in the final work? No.

This type of brief is is what is known as free pitching. IE the designer is expected produce a proposal that includes a considerable amount of prior work on the brief without payment. This is a highly controversial area amongst designers and many, including big companies who can afford to devote the resources, refuse to participate in this type of bid. Instead insisting that any decision be made on the quality and relevance of their previous work.

Here are a few articles on the subject. I hope GEMers will consider exactly what they are asking for when putting future briefs together and whether it is reasonable or not to demand free pitches.
