Absolutely agree. £350 is totally unacceptable for this project.

Re: Illustrator needed for family map/Free Pitching
I was considering putting in a proposal for this until I read this:-

‘Please send a proposal for the design and layout. This should include a sample character, map layout and illustration of one or more of the cultural organisations.’

I would estimate the work to be done before even being considered for this job to be at least 4-5 hours. Over £100 worth of work at my normal rates for a job worth £350. Am I prepared to do this? No. Do I have any guarantee that my design work won’t be shown to the successful candidate and my ideas used without payment or credit in the final work? No.

This type of brief is is what is known as free pitching. IE the designer is expected produce a proposal that includes a considerable amount of prior work on the brief without payment. This is a highly controversial area amongst designers and many, including big companies who can afford to devote the resources, refuse to participate in this type of bid. Instead insisting that any decision be made on the quality and relevance of their previous work.

Here are a few articles on the subject. I hope GEMers will consider exactly what they are asking for when putting future briefs together and whether it is reasonable or not to demand free pitches.

Hello all,

Please find attached a design brief for a family map – this is being jointly produced by a number of small museums in North London.

Proposals should be submitted directly to Rebecca Campbell-Gay at Islington Museum as per the brief ([log in to unmask]).

All best,
Nia
