I agree with the earlier suggestion of Blair Witch. I also thought of Fassbinder's Fear Eats the Soul, its pre-cursor, Sirk's All that Heaven Allows, and Haynes's remake Far From Heaven. These melodramas are great examples
that go beyond the theme of fear and offer up an interesting aesthetic too.
