Forthcoming research methods courses from the EPPI-Centre, Institute of Education, University of London 

Includes details of a NEW Social Policy and Social Research module and MSc in Social Policy and Social Research
Research methods courses from the EPPI-Centre will provide you with highly sought-after skills and knowledge, supporting career development in those academic, policy or practice settings where systematic reviews are used and produced.
 
1. Social Policy: Theory, Practice and Research - NEW for 2014/15
Runs for 10 weeks  from early October 2014 (three-hour weekly sessions; exact dates and times to be announced). 
This new masters’ module will provide you with a critical understanding of the field of Social Policy using a range of real world examples drawn from different policy settings in the UK and other countries. Particular attention is drawn to the role of research evidence in policy processes, from conception through to implementation and evaluation. The course is a core module in our MSc in Social Policy and Social Research, and can also be taken by students on our MSc in Research for Public Policy and Practice (see below).  

2. Systematic reviews for policy and practice – an online course in conducting and using reviews
Runs for 15 weeks from 8 September 2014. Deadline for applications 18 August. 
Systematic reviews for policy and practice will enable you to conduct and appraise systematic reviews. On completion, you will be familiar with the strengths and limitations of systematic reviews and have a critical appreciation of evidence-informed policy and practice. This online course allows you to choose where and when you study, whilst still receiving tuition from experienced researchers at the EPPI-Centre in London. Participation includes free access to our specialised systematic review software EPPI-Reviewer. Further details about the course from http://eppi.ioe.ac.uk/MSc/srpp

3. MSc Programmes
 
(i) MSc Social Policy and Social Research - NEW for 2014/15
Enrolment for October 2014 is now open. Deadline for applications 18 August.

This new MSc equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to work effectively in increasingly complex and challenging policy contexts. It provides research-led teaching on social policy issues in national and international contexts, and helps students understand and apply the research methods essential to policy analysis and evaluation.
The MSc is designed to allow students to follow specialist topics. There is one core module (see ‘Social Policy’ above) and students tailor their study through a choice of taught option modules, including at least one research methods module, and a specialised dissertation. Study routes include: Research for Policy and Practice; Evaluation of Social Interventions; Children and Families.

(ii) Research for Public Policy and Practice - Reviewing and using research

Deadline for applications 18 August. Opportunities for financial support for 2015 include an ESRC research studentship within the Social Policy Cluster: Evidence for Policy and Practice.

This MSc will equip you with conceptual and practical skills for conducting and appraising systematic reviews and evaluating the potential for and implementation of evidence-informed policy. Students can learn at a distance using a combination of online group and individual activities. You will receive support from experienced course tutors at mutually arranged times and written feedback on draft work. Students carry out activities at their own pace and at times of their own choosing, but are asked to complete specified tasks to set deadlines.

What different ways of studying are open to me? All of our modules can be taken as stand-alone courses with or without credit. All are quality assured at Masters level by the Institute of Education at the University of London. The MScRPPP can be taken entirely at a distance, but offers modules that are taught using face-to-face sessions for students who prefer this style of learning. The core module for MScSPSR is taught using face-to-face sessions, and module choices include face-to-face and distance learning options. 

Who takes our courses? 

Our recent short course and MSc students have come from a wide range of policy sectors, including health, but also social work, education and international development. Both MScs will also be of interest to recent graduates. To enrol for an MSc you will usually need a second-class degree in health, education or another area of social science or policy, or have another professional qualification e.g. for teaching, police force, health care, social work. If you have other kinds of qualifications you may be eligible but we may ask you to take a qualifying test. You will need to be able to communicate in English and have online access (see webpages below for full detail).
