Dear Colleagues, It is my intention to convene a panel at XXII World Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR), to be held in Erfurt (Germany) , 23-29 August 2015 (http://www.iahr2015.org/iahr/index.html) PANEL 'RETRADITIONALISATION, POST-ISLAMISM AND ANTI-FOUNDATIONALISM IN THE CONTEMPORARY MUSLIM WORLD' Since the 1990s, some researchers of the contemporary Muslim world have been predicting the end of political Islam, introducing the term Post-Islamism. This does not mean the end of the role of religion in the Muslim world. Against a background of growing instability in the Muslim world and in contrast to reactionary Islamism, a broad spectrum of Muslim intellectuals and activists seek alternative Muslim futures which retain an 'Islamic referent'. Ranging from social conservatives to progressives, they propose innovation through critical and appreciative engagement with the Islamic tradition. From Morocco to Indonesia and from Bosnia to South Africa, the vacuum in the centre is increasingly filled by a trend towards 'retraditionalization' (Heelas 1996). On the progressive side of the spectrum, alternatives are formulated that build on the work of Islamic heritage thinkers of the 1980s; poststructuralism and other anti-foundationalist philosophies, as well as postcolonial theory. This panel envisages bringing together presentations on these various trends and themes.
