Research Associate: £28,695 - £37,394

The Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) within the DPHPC (one of Europe's leading academic departments of population health sciences) is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary group currently comprising >50 staff and students.

For the current advertisement, the CEU seeks to appoint talented medical/applied statisticians who are interested in joining world-leading large-scale studies of cardiovascular disease. These positions can be filled by appropriate candidates at Research Associate or Research Assistant level, depending on relevant qualifications and experience.

The main responsibilities of this role will be to design and implement statistical analyses of genetic, biochemical and lifestyle data in relation to cardiovascular disease, to support the Unit’s two main areas of research: (1) disease aetiology, with implications for therapeutic strategies, or, (2) risk prediction, with implications for screening.

Tackling these areas will involve utilising a portfolio of studies involving large epidemiological databases and such analyses will provide internationally unique and unusually detailed insights into the relevance of novel risk factors to cardiovascular disease. The role will involve contributing importantly to a series of high-impact publications.

The post-holder will have: (1) relevant statistical qualifications (eg, a Masters or PhD in Medical/Applied statistics), (2) a sound understanding of statistical concepts, ideally in relation to chronic disease epidemiology (3) strong quantitative skills (4) experience of analysing large data sets independently using Stata/R/SAS (5) high level report writing and presentational skills. The post-holder should also be able to work independently, accurately judge priorities, and have excellent organisational and communication skills.
