I agree with Matt’s policy of capturing the highest possible quality within the project’s budget, timescale, scope etc.

I’ve seen many collections that had to be re-captured because the quality found not to be high enough for new applications.

I used to use polished small pieces of thick glass , but then found polished cubes of perspex as spacers.

Nigel

> Bethan. I see no reason to differentiate glass from film when it comes to digitisation. I have successfully copied both using a lightbox and combination of Hasselblad body, macro lens and Phase One P25 back. If you can find or create a holder to keep the originals off the surface of the box you should find the process quite efficient. The difference in dust and scratches on the final result was similar to the difference in printing with a condenser enlarger and a cold cathode for those who remember the old days.

> Hi Bethan,
> We don't have any glass plates so I can't comment on their digitisation. However, all our other 2D flat copy work is almost entirely camera based now. We use a Hasselblad/Phase combo for 'objects' and a Nikon D600 for 'non-object' copy work such as slides of objects using an LED lightbox and an old DeVere enlarger.

> We are currently looking at refreshing equipment with in the department, I'm keen to find out what people now use to digitise 2D Flat works. Typically we digitise flat work smaller then A3 on a Fuji Llanovia C550 flat bed scanner. Mostly for Glass plates, Large format Transparencies and Photographs / Letters. Also a Nikon super cool scan 5000 is in use for 35mm Negatives and Slides.

>
> In my opinion, I believe Glass plates are perfectly acceptable to use on a Llanovia flat bed, I haven't found an alternative piece of equipment that has been able to capture the quality better. If there is a better way please do get in touch.
