Hi John,

The place for rice research is IRRI (International Rice Research Institute) in the Philippines, who also publish genetic data: http://irri.org/our-work/research/genetic-diversity/international-rice-genebank

Related to this is the C4 rice research at Oxford: http://www.p21c.ox.ac.uk/content/crops

Also rice genetics research at York: http://www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2012/research/ancient-rice-secrets/

With regards Rural Economy, UN Global Pulse looks at an international level at big data for rural economy / development issues.

Within the UK Rural Economy and Land Use programme, various projects brought together a variety of existing data sources, so it depends how you define big data - multiple sources, or complex/large. Examples of multiple source data: Meg Huby, Richard Shepherd (http://relu.data-archive.ac.uk

Hi John,

May not be directly relevant but on the rural economy side see also the UK Rural Economy and Land Use programme (RELU) at http://relu.data-archive.ac.uk/about/history . Veerle Van den Eynden is the main contact - [log in to unmask] (but I think may have just gone on holiday after the ReShare presentation a day or so ago!)

There is an international Research Data Alliance Interest Group on agricultural data interoperability https://www.rd-alliance.org/node/181 with charter at https://www.rd-alliance.org/group/agricultural-data-interoperability-ig/wiki/agricultural-data-rda-interest-group-charter.html and various links to relevant meetings on related geospatial and other working groups.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Is anyone aware of any UK case studies using big data in an agricultural context. Plant genomics, especially involving staples like rice, and rural economy related work would be of particular interest.

Thanks

John
